“Questions Parents May Ask About Mentoring.”

1. What is a mentor?
The dictionary defines a “mentor” as a wise and trusted counselor and teacher.  In Lumpkin County, volunteers from our community are recruited to provide support and guidance to help students achieve academic, social and occupational success.

2. How are mentors selected?
Prospective mentors are recruited on a volunteer basis from local businesses, churches and the community at large.  Mentors complete an application process, which includes a reference and background check.  They also attend an orientation and training session.

3. What will the mentor do with my child?
The volunteer will meet with your child at school, on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, throughout the school year.  While together, the two may read, talk, study or attend a school-sponsored event.  As the friendship grows they may start setting academic and personal goals to begin working on.

4. Why was my child selected to have a mentor?
All students could benefit from one-on-one interaction, but often the teacher is unable to provide this type of direct attention.  Fortunately, we have people in our community who are willing to give their time and energy to help make a difference in the life of a child through encouragement and support.

5. Who can request a mentor for a student?
Anyone may refer or request a mentor for a student.  Generally, the referrals come from teachers, counselors, and parents and sometimes from students themselves.

6. How long will my child have a mentor?
The mentor and student (mentee) are asked to make a one-year commitment.  Ideally, however the mentor friendship would continue through the child’s academic education.  Often, mentors continue to serve as a mentor, year after year.

7. What can I do to help?
Parents are encouraged to be part of the mentor process.  There are many ways in which you can help make the mentor friendship a successful one.  Your show of support and interest in this new friendship will help your child benefit from a mentor.  You can encourage your child to attend scheduled mentor/mentee meetings at school, ask questions about activities and assignments and support his/her commitment to set and meet academic goals.

8. Who can I contact if I have questions or concerns?
You may contact your school counselor or Roger Greer at 706-867-7047 or email rgreer@lumpkin.12.ga.us.
